A 'claims made' policy is the opposite of a 'claims occurring' policy. It is most commonly recognised in motor insurance policy. It means that there must be a valid policy in force at the time any claim or allegations are made against you, irrespective of the date when the alleged negligence took place. If a 'claims made' policy is allowed to lapse, or is cancelled, any losses suffered are the responsibility of the individual and not the underwriter.
